Fernando Alonso could make a dramatic return to Formula One in 2021 after his former team Renault admitted they are considering re-hiring their former driver.

Alonso retired from the sport at the end of 2018, following four largely frustrating years at McLaren where uncompetitive machinery failed to give him any realistic chance of battling for world championships.

The Spaniard spent two spells at Renault, winning back-to-back world titles in 2005 and 2006, with a second tenure between 2008 and 2009 sandwiching a year at McLaren.

But at the age of 39, Alonso could return to the team based in Enstone for a third spell after team boss Cyril Abiteboul admitted he was among considerations to lead them in the wake of Daniel Ricciardo's departure to McLaren.

However, he stated there would be no rush to announce the Australian's replacement.

'There can be many drivers, there are great drivers who are free next year. The one you have mentioned [Alonso] is an option. Although there are others', he told Radio Montecarlo.

'The only thing I am saying is that we are going to take time to reflect. It is an extremely important decision and we do not want to enter the dynamic of Ferrari or tour thác bản giốc McLaren, who will have their reasons for doing so [announcing 2021 line-up early].

Renault need to find a replacement for Daniel Ricciardo, who will join McLaren from 2021

'Honestly, deciding on a driver in a season that has not yet started ... seems a bit strange to us. Choosing the driver is the last piece of the puzzle in the reconstruction, hence the importance of taking our time and tour thác bản giốc doing things well.'

Whether Alonso would accept a return to a midfield team is another matter. While he has hinted at a possible F1 comeback in the past year, it is thought he would only be interested in joining a team that is capable of battling for the world championship.

Despite fears Renault would quit the sport next term, the team announced on Friday they were fully behind their F1 project.

Other drivers Renault are assessing to partner Esteban Ocon next term include outgoing Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel as well as Lewis Hamilton's current Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas and former Renault driver Nico Hulkenberg.
