Today's Birthday, May 31: American actor and director Clint Eastwood (1930 - )

Clint Eastwood is one of Hollywood's quintessential icons and still making movies.

Pushing 90, the legendary filmmaker and actor has directed Richard Jewell and The Mule in the past two years - also starring in the latter.

Eastwood was born in San Francisco in 1930 and grew up in nearby Piedmont, tour hồ ba bể working various jobs after high school and studying at a Los Angeles community college before making the switch to acting.

His Hollywood career began with Universal Studios with roles in such B-grade titles as Francis in the Navy, Tarantula and Revenge of the Creature, all released in 1955.

Eastwood's breakthrough came in 1959 when he starred as Rowdy Yates in the TV western Rawhide, the series helping to nurture the ultimate tough guy image for the young actor.

After leaving the series in 1964, his career took an obscure but highly successful tangent.

Eastwood travelled to Italy where he starred in a number of spaghetti westerns including the hit A Fistful of Dollars (1964). This was followed by the cinematic classics For a Few Dollars More (1965) and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966).

After more westerns such as the 1969 musical Paint Your Wagon, he changed tack in the early 1970s, maintaining the steely-eyed screen persona but swapping the Wild West for contemporary urban America.

Don Siegel's 1971 film Dirty Harry starred Eastwood as a rogue police detective, tour hồ ba bể giving birth to the "tough-guy cop" genre and the iconic line: "You have to ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel lucky?' Well do ya, punk?". He played "Dirty" Harry Callaghan in four successful sequels.

Eastwood's film career maintained momentum for another four decades, with the veteran actor turning his hand to production and directing.

Some of the most critically acclaimed films he's directed this century include Million Dollar Baby (2004), Gran Torino (2008) , Invictus (2009), American Sniper (2014) and Sully (2016).

Eastwood has also been active in other fields like politics, becoming the mayor of Carmel-by-the-Sea, California in 1986.

He married Maggie Johnson in 1953 and the couple split in 1978. In 1996, Eastwood wed Dina Ruiz and the pair divorced in 2014.
