Geosynthetic refers to a product that is manufactured from a polymeric origin and is applied to geographical structure or system to achieve engineering purposes. The prefix 'geo' suggests that the application has something to do with earth, rock or soil. Due to the polymeric nature of the products, geosythetics is suitable for use where high durability is required. It is applied to a wide range of geographical landscape for solving civil engineering problems.

The International Geosythetics Society (IGS) was founded in 1982, subsequently, it organized a worldwide summit every four years. Presently, as per Geosythetics Market Trends , separate geosynthetic institutes, trade unions, and standards-setting organization are operating. Applications of geosynthetics widely include civil, transportation, geotechnical, marine and environment. Some other applications include the development of infrastructures like roads, railroads, embankment and retaining walls, canals, erosion control, waste landfill, land reclamation, jetties, aquaculture, agriculture, revetments, and mining. Types of Geosythetics:

Geosythetics can be broadly divided into the following eight types:

Geogrids: Geogrids are polymeric blends formed with an open and grid-like configuration with large apertures between ribs and cross directions. Geogrids is the fastest growing segment within geosynthetics.

Geotextiles: Geotextiles are textiles, they are made of synthetic fibers rather than natural ones. Thus biodegradation and short durability is not an issue.

Geonets: Geonets are formed by a continuous extrusion of parallel sets of synthetics fibers at acute angles to one another. The ribs can be open to provide relatively large apertures with a netlike setup. Its design functions completely within the drainage area where it can be used to convey liquids of all types.

Geopipe: Geopipe is used in transportation, environmental, hydraulic, and other engineering purposes.

Geomembranes clay liners: Geosynthetic clay liners (GCL) are a compound of polymer and natural soil materials. They are rolls of factory-fabricated layers of bentonite clay placed between two geotextiles or merged to a geomembrane.

Geofoam: Geofoam is a product created by a polymeric process that results in a foam-like structure that has many gas-filled closed cells.

Geomembrane: Geomembranes are a thin and impermeable sheets of polymeric material used primarily for linings and covers of liquid or solid storage facilities.

Geocomposites: Geocomposites consist of a combination of geotextiles, geogrids, geonets, and/or geomembranes in a factory-fabricated unit. Also, any one of these materials can also be combined with another synthetic material or with soil.

Functions and Applications of Geosythetics:

Barrier: In this type, geosynthetic acts as a relatively impermeable barrier for fluids or gases, it isolates one material from another. For example geomembranes, a thin film geotextile composites.

Drainage: The geosynthetic may acts as a drain that allows fluid flows to pass through less permeable soils. Prefabricated vertical drains (PVDs) is used for this purpose.

Filtration: The geosynthetic acts similar to a sand filter that allows water to pass through the filter while retaining all other substances.

Protection: Preventing or limiting damage to a given material by the use of a geotextile or a geotextile-related product.

Reinforcement: The geosynthetic is also a reinforcement material with the soil to produce a composite, which has improved strength and deformation properties over the natural soil.

Separation: The geosynthetic can also act as a barrier to separate two layers of soil that have different particle size distributions.

Surface Erosion Control: Geotextiles are used as daily covers to prevent soil erosion by wind or water.

Advantages of Geosythetics:

The low thickness of geosynthetics as compared to their natural counterparts is a big advantage as it is light in weight, Lạc Sơn Đại Phật requires less airspace and does not have quarried sand, gravel and clay soil materials.

Easy installation of geosynthetic is an advantage over the natural thick soil layers including sands, gravels, or clays as it does not require large earthmoving equipment. Geosythetics industry analysis has also pointed out that research work to further increase usability is underway in universities and research institutes.

Design methods are currently available from many scientific institutes as well as universities and research and development is also carried out.

When comparing geosynthetic designs to alternative natural soil designs there are usually cost advantages and invariably sustainability advantages like a lower CO2 footprint.

Limitations of Geosythetics:

Long-term durability of the particular type of resin used to make the geosynthetic must be assured by mixing proper additives like antioxidants, ultraviolet screeners, and fillers.

Clogging of geotextiles, geonets, geo pipe and/or geocomposites is a difficult task for some soil types or unusual geographical situations.

Installation, handling and storage and must be assured by quality control and quality assurance.
