Whether you love them or hate them, ‘transition glasses' that automatically darken in the sunlight have proven they are here to stay.
The technology has been around for decades - and now, it's had a futuristic upgrade.
Johnson & Johnson has unveiled a new line of contacts that puts the light-dimming filter directly on your eye, to block out UVs without the need for glasses.
But, for those with light-colored eyes, it could make for an eerie effect when they step out into the sun.
Each lens is equipped with a photochromic additive that blocks out UV light. This means that just like transition glasses, they darken when exposed to bright sunlight, and return to normal under dimmer conditions
Johnson & Johnson's new lenses, made in partnership with Transitions Optical, were cleared by the US Food and Drug Administration this week.
‘This contact lens is the first of its kind to incorporate the same technology that is used in eyeglasses that automatically darken in the sun,' said Malvina Eydelman, director of the Division of Ophthalmic, and Ear, Nose, and Throat Devices at the FDA's Center for Devices and polarized sunglasses offer (https://photochromicsunglass.com/) Radiological Health.
Called the Acuvue Oasys Contact Lenses with Transitions Light Intelligent Technology, they're made to be worn for a maximum of two weeks and then thrown out.

The lenses are intended for daily wear to correct vision in both near-sighted and far-sighted people.
While some might be wary of wearing of the shade-changing contacts, Johnson & Johnson says the technology was put through extensive testing before making it to the consumer.
‘This innovation was born out of deep research into consumer lifestyle needs and fits our future-forward approach to caring for human sight,' said Dr Xiao-Yu Song, Global Head of R&D for Johnson & Johnson Vision.
