When you have medications of any sort, keep them where your dog cannot get to it. If the dog gets near the pills, then just a few of them could do serious harm and result in a trip to emergency room. When your dog happens to get at your meds, call the vet ASAP.

If you have to go out, leave the TV or Cute Puppies radio on when you leave. The music will calm the dog down, and they'll feel like someone else is there. This little touch can help your dog feel less anxious as he awaits your return.

Keep your dog's teeth clean and healthy with regular brushing. Most canines don't mind you brushing their teeth, provided you introduce them to the process slowly and gently. Use a specially designed dog brush, along with other products made just for him. Remember to provide him with toys and biscuits that will also clean and protect his teeth.

When training your puppy or dog, keep the sessions short! Experts say that a dog has the attention span of a small child, sometimes less, Puppies Topic and that longer sessions will actually cause him to forget everything you've learned together. Use positive reinforcement and limit your training sessions to no more than 15 minutes.

Be strong when the time comes to say goodby to your beloved dog. Many owners keep the animal suffering to keep them in their lives and that's not fair to the dog. Consult with your vet, then talk it over with family. If it's time to part ways with your dog, do what's best for him.

Dog training requires you to be consistent. Once you decide you want to establish a rule for your dog, do not make any exceptions. Make sure everyone at home helps you enforce the rule and encourage your guests not to let your dog jump on them or to not acknowledge your dog when it barks.

Be a good neighbor and discourage your dog from barking, unless he is alerting you to danger. Most people get used to the sound of their dog yelping, but others find it a constant annoyance. If your dog barks often, consider talking to your vet about what could be causing it and how you can put a stop to it, for everyone's sake.

If your young dog is teething and gnawing at everything, buy him a fun chew toy and keep it in the fridge. Not only does this provide him with a good alternative to your furniture, but the cold will help to make his gums feel better. Most younger dogs gnaw out of necessity, not poor manners.

Designate a family member or close friend to be responsible for your dog, should something happen to you. If you are in an accident and unable to get home, your dog will need someone to feed him and Puppies Topic address other needs. Perhaps you trust a neighbor with your house keys and they could act for you in a time of need.

No matter what kind of dog you may have, hang up a few "Beware of Dog" signs on your property. They are known deterrents to would-be burglars and can help protect you and your family. Just the sign alone indicates probable failure of any robbery attempt and a single bark will have them running away!

If your dog suffers from separation anxiety, or you simply want to be extra nice to him, leave some music on when you go to work. That helps the dog feel like someone is around. The sounds might help to emulate a normal home environment when people are around.

Don't assume your toy-sized dog's bite isn't dangerous, just because he's little. A lot of owners brush-off training, thinking that the smaller breed dog can get away with a little bad behavior and this isn't true. As a responsible canine master, you've got to make certain your dog does not pose a threat to anyone by having him well trained.

Take the time to train your dog on a leash. He should know the "heel" command, stay close to you and not veer far ahead or drag behind. This will keep him safe, and it'll make walks more enjoyable. Not having to hold the leash tightly will make going for walks easier.

Schedule regular veterinary visits. Regular veterinary exams are extremely important for your dog's overall health - as with humans, it is important to catch any health problems early on. The vet will make sure that your dog is up to date on his vaccinations, and check for any other issues such as weight and dental problems or parasites.

If you have a snack, you might think that it's okay for your dog to take a bite. You can do this with some foods, but not all. Do not give dogs any chocolate or caffeine, as these foods are detrimental to their health. These food can have harmful effects on your pup's health.

Attention exercises must be practiced daily. These exercises will help you gain your dog's attention when they are barking or being disruptive or destructive. Once you can gain your dog's attention, you will have less to worry about when you have him out of the house or when there is company over.

Be prepared for natural disasters that also impact your dog. Have an emergency supply of water and food for him and know in advance if your local shelter for people will allow pets inside. Too many pets are injured or lost following storms, floods and other situations that cause chaos in a community.
